It’s the day after your baby’s birth and you’re heading home with your precious bundle of joy. You’re a little anxious about leaving the support of the hospital or birth center behind.
To say the last 48 hours have been an adventure is an understatement. But finally, your baby is here and together you are embarking on the journey that is the rest of your lives.
You arrive home, open the door and walk in. As you look across the space of your home you realize life is never going to be the same again. As you begin to settle in at home, exhaustion starts to set in. Then, your baby is ready to eat.
As you and your baby are learning how to navigate feeding, you are also struggling. Struggling with sleep deprivation, physical exhaustion and you’re thirsty. Like really thirsty! You gulp down a bottle of water as you finish feeding the baby. Then you try to sneak in a shower before the baby’s next feed.
As the hot water begins to relax your sore muscles your partner comes into the room with your baby. Your baby who is wide awake, crying, angry and beet red. It seems it’s time for another feed and your partner is feeling panicked and unable to soothe the baby.
For the next 8 hours, there is a cycle of broken sleep, and attempted feedings.
The next morning you and your partner are exhausted, dazed and in need of support. And sleep. Must. Have. Sleep.
That’s when my phone rings. I hear a voice on the other end of the line saying, “We need help. Tonight. Can someone come?”
